5 Must do’s for winter skin survival

With winter weather upon us there is sometimes nothing better than staying at home. Curling up in front of the fire, drinking hot drinks and let’s not forget winter warming foods. Winter is a time that can be very harsh on our skins and we can naturally become a little lazier.

So here is my personal five top tips to winter

1. Clean out bath room cupboard
Bathroom cupboards are often the death knell for skincare and make-up. So before you jump into that warm shower, sit in your PJ’s and sort out the cupboard.
Look for samples you have been given; all though hording these seem like a good idea sample sizing are not tested for life expectancy as they are not meant to hang around. So ditch anything you have had sitting there for over a year.
Sunscreens; check there used by dates as SPF’s have a 12month life span.
Find those products you have forgotten about; I cannot tell you often I get told “ohh I think I have one of those in the cupboard” Skincare only works when used! As I am about tell you the benefits of using a hydrating mask you may want to dig yours out.
2. Hydrating/nourishing mask, regularly
We regularly over heat ourselves in winter causing dehydration. Also the cold air of winter can freeze the water in your skin and causing chapping. If that is not bad enough in the cold air our naturals oils do not travel as freely over the skin to protect it. The answer is to use a hydrating/nourishing mask. In winter you can use a hydrating/nourishing mask 2-3 times a week depending on skin-type and lifestyle. Pop it on in the shower/bath, while cooking dinner or watching a DVD.
Your skin will be plumper, smoother and energized after a hydrating mask. The mask will help your skin protect itself against the harsh climate as well as lock in all that yummy moisture. AS dehydration is the first signs of age-ing masking is vital for the future of your skin.
3. Exfoliate like an expert
Exfolliating in winter becomes quiet an acquired skill, it is very easy to over exfoliate. Exfolaiting in winter is important to create cell renewal and decongest the skin (especially after all those rich foods). In winter to get the right balance using an AHA or enzyme exfolliant is the best. Granule (mechanical) exfolliants are brilliant in summer as it really give a strong pore cleaning effect where in winter it is more about cell renewal and product penetration.
Often in winter skin can dramatically dry out and becomes flaky and peeling. Our natural urge is to exfoliate and lift all those pesky flaky cells. This is possible the worst thing you can do. When the skin is in this condition is already vulnerable and fragile so taking away form it will only exasperate the situation. My biggest tip in this situation is too do a nourishing mask first ( I know crazy, trust me) this will help restabilise the acid mantle of the skin reducing the skins fragility. Then you can do a gentle exfoliation to lift any skin cells that are still hanging around. If your skin was in this condition I highly recommend doing another mask 2 day later.
4. Exercise
Yes we know that exercise is good for general health. However in winter it is even more important to burn off those heavy foods so they don’t affect the skin. Those sugary and greasy foods stimulate a skin reaction that cause breakouts and those lovely carbs can make the skin function sluggish.
Not only is exercise a preventive for skin it is a great treatment. The increase oxygen stimulates metabolic activity making the skin just glow. Nothing screams anti-winter than glowing skin. Also the increase blood flow improves nutrient delivery and toxin removal ensuring the skin looks even and plump.
5. Lip treatments
Hot chocolate, the extra coffee are deadly on luscious lips, the heat of the mug/cup really dries the lips out. Then add cold that freezes the moisture in lips and chaps them. Winter is just not a great time for lips. Instead of reapplying lip salves look for lip treatments which will improve the skin’s functionality as well as replenish moisture and a protective barrier.
